– Work of Antoni Gaudí i Cornet
– Remodeling of the house of the textile industrialist Josep Batlló
– It was built between 1905 and 1907
– Mosaic facade and ceramic roof.
With the collaboration of Josep Mª Jujol, Gaudí carried out a total remodeling of this existing building, added a basement and built a fifth floor for the service and personally took care of all the exterior and interior details, including the furniture. The result of its exterior facade is a party that is compared to carnival, the house is designed with shapes taken from nature. On top of the roof we can see a tower with a cross on top, there are those who interpret the sword of Sant Jordi crossing the dragon. It does not seem like a far-fetched interpretation, if we raise our heads and observe the ceramic roof with its steep slope, it really resembles the scales of a dragon.
A visit to the interior is highly recommended, its main floor with undulating ceilings, stucco on its walls, furniture and different elements that transport us to the time.
Curiosities:
Once at this point you will find yourself in the “Manzana de la Discordia”, on this sidewalk and continuously these three buildings converge; Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller and Casa Lleó Morera, work of the 3 main modernist architects of the time, they called it “Block of Discord”, in reference to the different styles of its facades.
