Iglesia de Belén

La Rambla

The Jesuits settled in Barcelona in the middle of the 16th century, building different buildings on the Rambla. The Bethlehem church dates from 1553 but a fire caused it to be rebuilt in 1681.
It is inspired by the Church of the Gesú in Rome, we only have to observe its baroque façade, one of the few of this style that we can see in Barcelona.
Apparently the interior decoration of the temple was impressive, unfortunately everything was destroyed after the fire of 1936 in the middle of the Civil War.
It was a very visited church, it was part of the citizen pilgrimage in their walks along La Rambla.
The church is made up of a nave with a semicircular apse and ten side chapels, it has an upper gallery to accommodate the aristocracy. The exterior facade that overlooks Carme Street shows us its maximum Baroque expression, with Solomonic columns, statues of saints and all kinds of ornamental elements.
